Restoring Hope for Stroke Patients at HealthSouth Valley of the Sun

May is National Stroke Awareness Month and HealthSouth Valley of the Sun Rehabilitation Hospital is using this opportunity to bring awareness and educate the public on the difference rehabilitation can make in a patient’s recovery after stroke.
HealthSouth Valley of the Sun received the 2015 Stroke Center of Excellence designation by HealthSouth Corporation. As one of only 10 out of HealthSouth’s 122 hospitals across the country to receive this honor, HealthSouth Valley of the Sun is being touted for this internal recognition for going above and beyond in its patient care by providing a vast array of stroke-related programs and services, exceeding established benchmarks in clinical programming and patient outcomes for the treatment of stroke. Some of those benchmarks include the program being led by specially trained personnel including a board-certified physician and certified rehabilitation registered nurses (CRRN®s). A hospital must also be awarded Disease-Specific Care Certification in stroke rehabilitation from The Joint Commission, in order to be eligible for this award.
Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability and the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States. Studies indicate 60 percent of stroke survivors can benefit from comprehensive rehabilitation. Eighty percent of patients receiving this level of therapy return to their homes, work, schools or active retirement, according to the National Rehabilitation Caucus.
“Whether the patient has experienced stroke, a hip fracture or a brain injury, each patient’s recovery is different,” said Beth Bacher, chief executive officer at HealthSouth Valley of the Sun. “We work closely with each patient to create a plan that meets their needs and goals allowing the patient to comfortably return to his or her community at their highest level of independence. It makes us proud to be able to offer this service and see the impact it makes.”
HealthSouth Valley of the Sun provides patients with an individualized treatment plan that includes physical, occupational and speech therapies. With 15 hours of comprehensive therapy each week and around-the-clock nursing care, teams of expert clinicians target the side effects of stroke which can include weakness or partial paralysis, speech and swallowing difficulties, trouble with balance and movement and difficulties with grasping.
