HealthSouth Presents Amputation Rehabilitation Course at National Conference
7/21/2015
GLENDALE, Ariz.– The Amputee Coalition 2015 National Conference is the most anticipated event for the limb loss community and will take place in Tucson, Arizona, at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa, featuring the nation’s top amputee experts and new technology. In the United States, there are approximately 1.7 million people living with limb loss according to The Amputee Coalition with approximately 185,000 amputations occurring in the United States each year.
HealthSouth inpatient rehabilitation hospitals are a leader in amputee physical rehabilitation with access to the latest technology and treatment for people who have had an amputation. HealthSouth hospitals offer the clinical, technical and professional expertise needed to help patients progress toward total independence.
“The Amputee Coalition is pleased to partner with HealthSouth again this year to offer its Amputation Rehabilitation course for professionals at our 2015 National Conference in Tucson,” said Susan Stout, president and CEO of the Amputee Coalition. “This course is important, as it is designed to assist professionals who work with amputees on an everyday basis, which of course helps our constituents. By working closely with the professionals in the industry, we are achieving our mission to reach out and empower people affected by limb loss to achieve their full potential through education, support and advocacy, and to promote limb loss prevention.”
On Wednesday, July 22, HealthSouth Valley of the Sun physical therapist assistant, Lonnie Coughran, MA and UVA- HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital therapy team leader, Heather Carpenter, MSPT, ATC, will present an abbreviated version of the HealthSouth Amputee Rehabilitation Course at the conference. Lonnie is one of only six of HealthSouth’s 24,000 employees recently recognized as an Outstanding Employee Achievement Award recipient. His expertise in amputee treatment has allowed him to contribute to extraordinary patient experiences- including a veteran and double amputee, who recovered and eventually ran in 22 half-marathons, three full marathons and successfully climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro.
HealthSouth’s Amputation Rehabilitation Course is a one-day comprehensive and interactive course designed for healthcare providers who work with limb loss patients discussing issues and treatment from the time of amputation through prosthetic delivery and gait training. Attendees will gain confidence from the course through the rehabilitation and management of amputee patients.
“HealthSouth is the only hospital system with an in-house amputee program providing real education to therapist,” said Lonnie. “This course does a great job of making a clinician feel confident and knowledgeable treating the amputee population and it’s an honor to present our HealthSouth amputee education course on a national level and it be adopted as a national standard of treatment.”
