Inspiring Amputee to Speak at HealthSouth Valley of The Sun Patient Reunion

8/30/2016

HealthSouth Valley of the Sun Rehabilitation Hospital will host its annual patient reunion on Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the hospital’s gymnasium located at 13460 North 67th Avenue. The event is being held as part of the hospital’s National Rehabilitation Week activities and will celebrate patient success and independence. One highlight of the event will be an inspiring presentation given by former patient Terry Deignan.

Deignan’s life changed dramatically on Memorial Day 2015 when she was walking into a restaurant and an impaired driver hit her leaving her pinned under the vehicle with the tire rapidly spinning on her right leg. She suffered bleeding into her brain, fractures to her right knee, hip and arm, multiple facial fractures and severe damage to her left ankle and foot. After multiple surgeries, a below-the-knee amputation became the best course of action for her left leg. Once medically stable, she was transferred to HealthSouth Valley of the Sun, an inpatient physical rehabilitation hospital, where she learned skills like transferring with a slide board, working with adaptive equipment to provide for her basic needs and those to help her prepare for her future prosthetic amputee rehabilitation. Since Deignan’s return to home, she continues to maintain her strength and has aspirations to get back to hiking the mountains around Phoenix in the near future.

“We invite you to see how the power of rehabilitation helps so many individuals not only gain independence, but also the confidence needed to return to their communities and doing the things they love,” said HealthSouth Valley of the Sun CEO Beth Bacher. “We are incredibly proud to have been part of Terry’s road to recovery and are inspired by her determination and positive attitude throughout the journey.”

If you would like to attend, an RSVP is requested before Sept. 14 and may be directed to Lori Ferguson at 623-334-5423 or [email protected].
